Hiring a Handyman:
what to check

Registrations, certificates, questions to ask and typical UK prices.

A handyman is the right call for the small jobs that pile up: flat-pack furniture, shelves, TV mounting, sticking doors, curtain poles, fence panels and minor repairs. Grouping several jobs into one visit is usually the cheapest way to get them done.

Know where the line is. Handymen shouldn't take on anything involving gas, and most electrical work beyond like-for-like swaps (such as new circuits or bathroom electrics) needs a registered electrician under Part P. For those, use a specialist.

Many handymen charge by the half day or day. List every job with rough sizes and photos when you ask for a quote; it gets you a far more accurate price.

Typically £25–£45 an hour in the UK, often with a minimum charge. Half-day and day rates are common.
