Registrations, certificates, questions to ask and typical UK prices.
Most plumbing jobs fall into two groups: the urgent (a leak, a burst pipe, a blocked toilet) and the planned (a new tap, a radiator, a bathroom). For anything urgent, find your stopcock first. It's usually under the kitchen sink or where the water pipe enters the house. Turning it off stops the damage while you wait.
Plumbing and gas are different trades. A plumber can fix pipes, taps and radiators, but only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to work on your boiler's gas supply or any gas appliance. If the job touches gas, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card.
For bigger jobs, get a written quote that says what's included: materials, making good, and removal of old fittings. It's the easiest way to compare prices fairly.

Turn off the water at the stopcock, switch off any electrics near the leak, and move valuables away. Photos help your insurer.
Only if they're also Gas Safe registered. Boiler repairs involving gas must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the ID card.
Most UK plumbers charge roughly £50–£80 an hour, with higher rates for evenings and emergencies. Ask for the rate before they visit.
